At Anabranch Solutions, we tackle riverscape restoration challenges differently than most.
We are a riverscape restoration firm that looks to rivers and ecosystem engineers for clues about how to harness these alternative solutions that may seem to diverge from standard practices, but we think will ultimately converge on more efficient and self-sustaining solutions to the challenges we face.
who we are
Anabranch Solutions was founded in 2015 and is owned by three aquatic scientists with diverse backgrounds: Stephen Bennett, Nick Bouwes and Joe Wheaton. Each of them are experienced riverscape designers and specialists in their respective fields, who are passionate about conservation and restoration.
Anabranch Solutions also has a team of associates with science and restoration backgrounds who bring a diverse range of skills, talents and expertise to projects. Our staff includes experienced riverscape designers, construction foreman, laborers, technicians and administrative personnel who ensure continuity and make sure projects are completed on a timely basis and conducted professionally.

our philosophyLow-tech process-based restoration is a way to maximize restoration efforts through scaleable practices that initially mimic, quickly promote natural processes, and eventually restore self-sustaining processes that maintain improved riverscape health.
Structural starvation of wood and beaver dams is one of the most common impairments affecting riverscape health. We helped to pioneer the use of low-tech structures, namely beaver dam analogs (BDAs) and post-assisted log structures (PALS) to initiate these processes that use the power of flowing water to do the bulk of the work. |
An anabranch is a secondary or alternative channel that branches off from a river or stream and later rejoins the main stem channel downstream.
We are leaders in development, design, and implementation that maximize the benefits of low-tech process-based riverscape restoration.
services we offer
Design & constructionWe employ a rapid field-based design approach identifying risks and opportunities to restore riverscape function based on assessment of local geomorphic characteristics. We avoid expensive modeling approaches that provide precise but often inaccurate predictions. Our designs focus on restoring processes to riverscapes and introducing the "tools" (beaver and/or wood) to create self-sustaining riverscapes. |
adaptive management, monitoring & evaluationWe recognize that healthy riverscapes are dynamic, and that restoration of self-sustaining solutions requires maintenance or subsequent treatments until the system recovers. As such, we use practical adaptive management approaches to implement and manage restoration projects over time. |
Promoting greater riverscape health through alternative, scaleable & accessible restoration & conservation solutions.
